Place Branding Education: Meeting the Global Demand for Skilled Professionals
In the competitive world of place branding, mastering the intricacies of strategic planning is essential for success. This is where The Place Brand Academy steps in, offering expert training courses to equip marketing teams in the hospitality, tourism, and travel sectors with the skills they need to excel.

The success of the undergraduate module in Place Branding and International Diplomacy that I developed at Middlesex University and taught across campuses in Dubai, Mauritius, Hanoi, and London revealed something fascinating: students are passionate about telling stories of place and identity. They engage deeply with questions about how their homes are branded and how this reflects their lived experiences.
What makes place branding education unique is its ability to address 'wicked problems' - from climate change to social inequity, from housing affordability to over-tourism. Students are excited about applying creative thinking to real-world challenges while exploring diverse career opportunities in tourism promotion, public administration, and government communications.
However, existing educational frameworks for teaching place branding are limited. While organizations like IPBA offer periodic short courses, and some universities include place marketing streams in their programs, there's a clear need for comprehensive education that balances theory with practice.
Our response was to design a series of self-directed courses that maintain branding principles at their core while acknowledging the unique challenges of promoting places. Our course curriculum will focus on everything from brand architecture and identity to digital engagement and storytelling, all while maintaining realistic expectations about what place branding can achieve.
As we continue to develop place branding education, our focus remains on building a strong community of practice and preparing professionals who can make a meaningful impact in this growing field.
